Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction-A Gift with Innumerable Benefits

Saturday, October 7, 2023

10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon

Presented by Dr. Tom Goddard

Reduce Stress and Help Various Health Conditions

Offered in-person and on Zoom.

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction ("MBSR"), introduced to the healthcare system in the 1970s by Jon Kabat Zinn, has been shown in hundreds of peer-reviewed studies and clinical trials to be beneficial for healthy adults, teens, and children in reducing stress. Because stress causes many other health problems, it also has been shown to positively impact folks with eating disorders, certain psychiatric conditions, sleep disorders, pain, cancer, psychological distress, and a wide variety of other health conditions. In this experiential workshop, Dr. Tom will introduce some of the basic ideas and evidence-based exercises of MBSR -- ideas that anyone can take home and incorporate into their lives to improve their overall physical and mental well-being.

10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon

Presented by Nancy Davison, PT/LAc

Are you having trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep?  What is sleep apnea?

Offered in-person and on Zoom.

More than 40 million Americans are sleep deprived.  Research has shown that chronic lack of sleep triggers health problems such as changes in memory and coordination, hypertension, diabetes, stroke and heart attack.  In this workshop, we’ll explore the variety of disorders that leave you feeling sleep deprived during the day. Are you experiencing unpleasant dreaming, tossing and turning? At times, it’s difficult to quiet our minds with thoughts of pending or incomplete tasks. We will explore causes of these problems i.e., pain, snoring/apnea, household disturbances, fears and worries, sadness, and positioning.

Sleep is the best time to restore your mind and body. The primary focus of this workshop is to identify ways to improve the quality and duration of sleep, i.e., routines, diet, exercise, and positioning.  Participants are encouraged to share their struggles, as well as any solutions they may have discovered for a deep, restorative night's rest.
